Emulator, Multitouch PC Software, Makes Tablets into Controllers for Traktor, More

The Apple iPad has terrific, responsive multi-touch input, but for many, using it to control music would mean carrying an iPad and a computer. That’s a cheaper combination than using a JazzMutant Lemur with a computer, but it’s still two pieces. With a number of PCs gradually adding touch capabilities, it seems inevitable that integrated touch for music will become at least a compelling option. These machines also have some features the iPad lacks, such as USB and other conventional I/O, and true pen input, which can be more precise for arts applications …and they’re traditional computers, with all the flexibility that entails.
Argentina-based DJ Pablo Martin gives CDM the scoop on his new Emulator software. The descendant of the Lemur-style MonotouchLive control, Emulator looks more mature, and adds multi-touch support. It’s ready to run Traktor out of the box, but other tools are possible, too. With a revision of HP’s TM2 expected this summer, we could have an interesting, more powerful alternative to the more limited tablets about to follow in the iPad’s footsteps. (I’ll say this – it would have been a better machine on the trip I’m on currently, both for the touch/tablet capabilities and longer battery life than my more conventional Asus laptop.)
I’ll let Pablo explain the rest. I’m in touch with HP and others, so I hope to offer some information on what these solutions are like, alongside the iPad, of course.

This are the first images i make public of my new touchscreen MIDI controller (now with mulitouch support). The older Monotouchlive is now discontinued and the new software born is called EMULATOR.
The first version i plan to launch very soon, including control for traktor on internal mode; the other interfaces are under development (traktor external ableton etc etc)
This software is designed to work with tablet PCs, the model i suggest for use with my software is the wonderful HP TM2, or the older model TM2Z. It also can be used with lenovo multitouch tablet and DELL XT tablet. All these tablets support multitouch, have capacitive digitizers, but again i suggest the HP TM2, due to it having a wonderful capacitive digitizer from WACOM; it’s really good quality tablet.
The CPU power of TM2 is perfect to run Traktor; I tested with Ableton without any troubles. Some guys think the CPU on HP TM2 doesn’t have enough power, but that is wrong.
The major problem with present touchscreen controllers is that you don’t have tactile feedback (you can’t feel with your fingers knobs, buttons, sliders etc etc), for that reason you need put your eyes all time on the touchscreen device for use the controller, and lose the focus over music software.
Emulator is a software where you have all what you need on same screen and combine the power of multitouch, the useful standard mouse and the native interface of software to be controlled all in one nice and useful GUI.
This software runs under windows 7; the first version I plan to launch only works on tablet PCs with 12.1 inch screen (1280×800). I decided to do this because the big LCD multitouch screens available on the market aren’t really accurate and enough for pro usage; [optical sensors can] generate false touch, ghost touches, etc. and you lose portability [on larger screens].

No pricing or release yet – Pablo is looking for a sponsor (HP?) – but I’ll keep you posted. Let us know what you think of the design.

Techno Music

Techno music came out of Detroit in the 1980's, and carried the influences of popular electronic music of the 1970's to the dancefloors. The music features regular, pouding beats coupled with distorted synthesized sequences.

The best known early techno producers are Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson, sometimes known as the Belleville Three. They made music for clubs that was a urban take on the music of German musicians like Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream were making. While Techno made it to the clubs in Chicago and New York, it was a largely underground style throughout the eighties.

What is Techno?

Techno is pure electronic music, originally designed for dances, that combines the sound of classic German electronica with an american Urban feel. The music emphasizes the machine sound of electronic drum machines, especially the Roland TR-808, and often is based around repetitive riffs played on bass line sequencers like the Roland TB-303.

The history of techno starts in Detroit. The style emerged there when musicians took cheap, used electronic instruments and abused them in ways never intended by their creators. Early techno artists drew on science fiction and futuristic themes in their music. The techno sound depicted a place unlike the aging Detroit city where it was born. The music and the themes of the songs were intended to sound like something from the future. “It’s an attitude to making music that sounds futuristic,” according to techno pioneer Juan Atkins, “something that hasn’t been done before.”

One of the best known early techno songs is "Alleys of your Mind", by techno artists Cybotron. Works from Atkins, May and Saunderson didn't make the charts, but were very influential because they were played in major clubs in the US. In 1988, a compilation called Techno! The New Dance Sound helped define the style.

In the 90's, artists in Europe began to take the Detroit sound of early techno songs and morph it. New variations were created, including acid, ambient techno, hardcore, and jungle. The techno style has gained more popularity in Europe than it has in the United States, because electronica has been popularized more in Europe than in the US.

Techno has been associated with raves since the nineties. The idea of a rave is just a techno party where like-minded techno fans can get together and dance to continuous dj mixes of electronic music. These have been particularly popular in Europe. In 2000, the Detroit Electronic Music Festival became one of the largest and most significant electronica events in the world. It was free and attracted hundreds of thousands of techno music fance from all over the world.

Lucas love for music was born from an early age, at 15 he was driving his radio music show. In 2000 his first steps as a DJ were performing in various local festivals. From 2002 to 2005 part of the "Vinyl," which aired on Nova 93.1 FM with DJ DJ Roberto Diego D1 and C4 in the city of Veronica, where he gains experience and is influenced by the sound and progressive house. In 2006, already installed in the city of La Plata, Lucas begins to produce his own tracks and remixes, having these great acceptance of people. His most famous remix Shaw Mitiska - Silently (Lucas del Valle Rmx) came at the hands of Dj Dutchman Bengamin Bates which was included in their sets. Since 2006 he shared booth with Ale Lacroix, Lucas Ferro, Jam-on, Romix, Club Rayo, the C .. Est beat among others, and has performed at several clubs in his country, which include La Caseta ( Mar del Plata), Hummer (BsAs), Nix (BsAs), De la Ostia (La Plata), El Signo (Pinamar). In mid-2008 is the first time outside playing in Central drive from the city of Montevideo, Uruguay. In 2009, competing in the contest Numark dj 2009, ranking first among 11 finalists djs. Lucas sets combine sounds from the soulfhoul, to funky and tribal house, all mixed with the resources of the old school as eg acapellas and samples from movies and classic themes of house. Creating a pure party atmosphere. For 3 consecutive years, his radio show "Night Club" issued by the online radio OnlyClub, got good reviews worldwide and was even included in the programming of the radio recognized Di Fm. In 2009 he was a resident of the club's most important electronic music of your city "De la Ostia" which also had its cycle every Thursday called "House Nights." Today has the latest news of house music in his new radio show "Sensations of Argentina" which is broadcast every Wednesday every 15 days by Ssradiouk (http://tuff.ssradiouk.com) and a resident and organizer of the cycle in Hook Expressions La Plata.

Pete Heller is an electronic and house music producer from England. He is recognized in the dance community for his solo work and his remixes with frequent collaborator Terry Farley. As a duo they have released popular tunes under the names 'Heller & Farley Project' (or 'Farley & Heller'),Fire Island and 'The Look and Feel'. In 1996 the two released "Ultra Flava," a #3 U.S. dance single.

On his own, Heller hit #1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Party chart with "Big Love" featuring Octahvia a which held the top spot for three weeks and also was ranked by Billboard magazine as the #1 dance song of 1999. Heller remixed The Chemical Brothers' 2002 release Star Guitar, which reached #8 in the UK Chart.

In 2004 Heller launched his own label, Phela Recordings as a platform for his own productions and collaborations with other artists.

He has five siblings (Simon, Andrew, Judy, Daniel and Vicky). He attended Dulwich College and Manchester University.

BIOGRAPHY

Leon Bolier was born in 1980 somewhere in the middle of Holland, and always was in love with moody music.

When he heard Energy 52’s Cafe Del Mar he fell in love with melodic trance, and quit producing hardcore house.

In 2002 and 2003 he got his first record deals, together with his brother Bart. They released some tracks on Bonzai/Banshee and FTM sublabels. Back then the first contacts with Armada frontman Maykel Piron were established via Armin van Buuren, and this resulted in Leon remixing the first ever Armada release.

Nowadays Leon releases stuff on labels like Armada Music, Blackhole Recordings, Spinnin Records and Sweden-based Captured Music (Bart quit musicproducing due to the fact that he started his own company that provides in garden-architecture). He uses different guises for different styles, this resulting in progressive, trance, techy and even electro influenced releases on those various labels. His releases have been caned by the worlds big djs, like: Tiesto, Armin van Buuren, Paul van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, Sasha, John Digweed, Paul Oakenfold, Marco V and many many more. Besides. his tracks have been compiled on CDs by e.g. Tiesto (In Search of Sunrise) and Armin van Buuren (A State of Trance), and on other big compilations.

Due to these successes he’s been a popular remixer now, and becomes a more and more well known DJ, getting more and more gigs, in the Netherlands and abroad.

Born in eastern Berlin, Maria is the youngest in a multicultural family. Maria grew up with classical music, as the daughter of an enthusiastic hobby pianist and as the sister of a choir guitarist. Her first contact with vinyl occurred at the age of six while scanning the record-collection of her parents ‑ Abba to Tchaikovsky. The record-player of the household was later confiscated, and musical entertainment within the family home was limited. After the falling of the Berlin Wall, Maria soon got access to electronic music, which she frequently likes to refer to as a kind of ‘digitized classical music‘. She feels there are infinite possibilities to interpret the music for oneself and therefore it is very suitable for diving into.

After a break from 2004, for different private reasons, Maria relaunched in 2007. Many things developed since than. 2008 was a really good year - there were lots of interesting projects and bookings and of course not to forget the ‘Mashkova & Friends’ event series which were really good and fun! now 2009 has several new and exciting projects coming up, always according to her philosophy: “…Music is more than just a sound!“

Dutch DJ Tiësto's fourth studio album Kaleidoscope comes with a variety of collaborative vocal guests spots including Jónsi of Sigur Rós, Kele of Bloc Party, Nelly Furtado, Calvin Harris, Emily Haines, and Tegan & Sara. He explains the logjam:

The starting point was to work with different artists that I liked. It was as simple as that. Sigur Rós make beautiful music. Bloc Party are fantastic and exciting and innovative. But the hardest thing initially was to get those kind of people to collaborate. They don't work with dance artists as a rule, and especially not a dance DJ, but when we started producing these tracks, I was surprised at how well the styles work together.

The first collaboration took place a year ago or so with T&S. If you recall, he remixed their "Back In Your Head." This time time they feel someone deep in their bones. As far as the he said/she said, he gave them a track, they wrote lyrics and vocal lines for it, he finished it up in his Holland studio. The artists are pretty stoked about the results. As Sara puts it:

Tegan and I would happily disband if Tiësto let us tour the world with him. I'd take dance lessons and would be open to discussions about wearing "outfits" on stage. We're proud of the collaboration and can't wait for people to hear the song!
